When we first met Captain Marvel in the beginning of this movie, she is known as Vers. She has not much knowledge of her past, except of flashbacks that haunt her and keep her up at night. She is a Kree intergalactic warrior caught in a battle between her people and the Skrulls. However, most of all, she is caught in a war of who is truly is.
You and me, like Vers, are often trapped by the memories of our past. These memories prevent us from living a great story, and ultimately keep us from living the life we were meant to live.
When Vers is given evidence of who is truly is, her inner war unravels. She discovers that she had a life on C-53 (earth) from the Skrulls. However, the true collapse of this war is when she discovers her true identity from a woman named Maria Rambeau. She is Carol Danvers, a Air Force pilot who was ridiculed and put down by everyone in her life. Maria was the only one who truly cared about her and became a second family to her. She is the only one who can testify to her who she truly is.
Like Carol, we need people to testify to us our true identity. We need to be reminded of who we truly are and the way we are wired. Carol was reminded of her determination to never give up in adversity. Like Danvers, I don’t know who I would be today without the people who have reminded me of this truth. It has helped to provide inner healing to my soul, but the true healing has been when the Father reminds me of who I am: A child of His.
I grew up in the church, but I was hurt emotionally during my college years by people who were trying to help with a sinful struggle within my soul. They had good intentions, but it doesn’t mean that hurt and pain still resulted from it. I know I am not the only one who has been wounded. The scars and wounds of emotional, physical, and spiritual abuse are real and impactful. They are from a war we feel like we will never claim victory.
But we don’t have to fight this war on our own. Let us be reminded of the truth in John 1:12: “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision, or a husband’s will, but born of God.”
If we have received him, believe in him, we have the power of the Holy Spirit living and moving within us. It is with this power we can claim victory over Satan.
The evil one wants us to be locked within our past, and keep us with living our best story. God wants the scars of our lives merely to be reminders of the love He carries deep within his heart for us.
So today, share your story and your true identity to the world. Point people to the God who stays and runs in pursuit of you and every heart on Earth.
