I still haven't found what I am looking for- U2

It is not a popular opinion in the church to have doubt. One is either fully believing in God or not believing in Him at all. I myself have struggled with doubt, not in the existence of God, but in his goodness. I have wondered if I would ever find what I was looking for in my earthly existence.

This is why this song is such a comfort and reassurance to me and my heart. It has helped me to see that it is okay to have doubt in the midst of my belief in God and His Son, Jesus. Doubt has helped me to see and question where my true foundation is. “Is my foundation in Jesus or my circumstances?” Asking such a question helps to remind me that God’s goodness has never changed in every season of life. Doubt has been the turning point in bringing me into a deeper relationship with God.

It is very easy for us to think we have found what we are looking for once we enter into a relationship with God. In a certain sense, yes, we have found it, but in deeper sense, we haven’t found what we are looking for. We are looking to find in ourselves a faith without doubt, pain, heartache, or disappointment. We will not find such a faith. We want a world with just pure and unadulterated joy. However, we wouldn’t find it on this side of heaven. We wouldn’t find what we are truly looking for until we meet the Lover of our souls, Jesus.

The apostle Paul says in Philippians 3:13-14, “ Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Paul hadn’t found what he was looking for, but he knew the secret to finding what he was looking for was in pressing on forward in his relationship with God until the day God called him home. He knew if he forgot what was behind him in his life, he could live with the end in mind. Isn’t that what we are called to do? We are called to live in such a way that we live with eternity on our minds as we press on to win the prize God has called us until we see him face to face.

So friends, I urge you to press forward in your faith in Jesus, even with your doubts, pains, heartaches, and disappointments. Run the race of faith with perseverance and turn your eyes to Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith. Find joy in the journey knowing he is with you each step of the way. One day when you reach the culmination of your earthly journey, you will find what you were looking for all along. You will find Jesus meeting you face to face saying with a warm embrace, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Prayer: Jesus, we have doubt in the midst of our faith. We pray that you meet us there and help us to see where our true foundation is. Will we place our faith in circumstances or in you? It is only up for us to answer. Help us to press forward in our faith in you even when the pain of life brings us down. May we run the race of faith with perseverance, turning our eyes to you, the author and perfecter of our faith. One day we know we will see you and we are so looking forward to that beautiful, glorious day. In your name, we pray, “Amen.”
