To appreciate the true beauty of this song, you need to know what ‘Kyrie Eleison’ means. Kyrie Eleison is Greek for’ Lord have mercy’ . It is used as a prayer in Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches.
One of the opening lines of the song is
“Somewhere between the soul and the soft machine
Is where I find myself again.”
One thing I love about this song is that it talks about how the spiritual intersects with our day to day lives. It is so true that we often find ourselves caught in the world between following God and all the other demands for our attention.
I see the chorus as a profound invitation for God to enter into our day to day lives. I will be going through the chorus line by line and expand upon what it means to me.
“Kyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel”
The road we must take as Christ-followers is a hard and difficult road. Sometimes I have felt like I have had it all together as a Christ-follower, and other days I felt like giving up. It may seem like you and I are going the wrong way at times, but really it is just a long way home to our true home. We need God’s mercy to carry us through each step of the way.
“Kyrie eleison, through the darkness of the night”
Through the hard times of our lives, we also need God’s mercy to sustain us. The mercy of God surrounded Jennifer and I through the months Joseph was in the hospital. Through prayers, food, encouragement, God’s mercy was was with us. Without God’s mercy, I don’t know if we would be where are now.
“Kyrie eleison, where I'm going, will you follow?”
The road of faith is a road that sometimes has to wrestle with doubt.
On social media this past week, I have seen friends who I looked up to as genuine Christ-followers come out as not being Christians anymore. It is hard because these were people I looked up to and respected.
But in this doubt, God has reminded me that my faith must not be in people, but in Him. I am reminded also that it is okay to wrestle with doubt, because in the wrestling my faith is becoming worth more than gold.
“Kyrie eleison, on a highway in the light”
When we truly walk in the paths of God, we are shining like stars in the universe (Philippians 2:15). It is where we become alive and at our freest.
Walking with Jesus has been my greatest adventure. Sure, it has been full of bumps and bruises, but ultimately it has been about embracing the light of Jesus and going after that light. In going after that light, I have hopefully become more like Jesus and pointed others to Him.
May the cry of your hearts today, and ultimately your life be “Kyrie Eleison” as you seek to walk more in the ways of Jesus and point people to Him.
