"So what now

What will you do now that you've found Me

What now

What will you do with this treasure you've found

I know I may not look like what you expected

But if you'll remember

This is right where I said I would be

You found Me

What now”

Maria was a little girl in the slums of Mathare Valley, Kenya. She was disabled and was often neglected by members of her own family.

My teammate Hannah went on that first home visit with me to visit her. Hannah asked me after that visit, “Did you see Jesus in her?”

I said that I didn’t. However, I wondered why my teammate had seen Jesus in her and I hadn’t been able to see Jesus.

When I went to visit her again, I went with the intent to see Jesus in her.  I met Jesus face to face in Maria, and the truth of Matthew 25: 40 hit me square in the face. Matthew 25:40 reads, “Truly, whatever you did for the least of these, brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

If I am honest, I would say that this encounter didn’t instantly changed my life. I still have a hard time adjusting my perspective to see Jesus in the poor and needy. I want to see him when I want to see him. When I change my perspective though, I see Jesus in a fresh way just like I did with Maria. God has a special place in his heart, for the poor, the underdog.

We are all poor, spiritually or materially. We were all once the least of these. But what are we doing to see Jesus in those who need him most? What now?

Will we be attentive to the needs of the poor? Will we seek to empower them so that they can fully realize their potential?

These are the questions we must ask ourselves if we want to take care of the poor all around us.

Let us put our hands around the world by starting with one person in need. All it takes is one to change a life forever.
